The S&P 500 posted its strongest weekly gain since late November, snapping a five-week slide in a holiday-shortened stretch that ended Thursday, April 2, with markets closed for Good Friday. The catalyst came Tuesday, when President Donald Trump said U.S. and Iranian negotiators had held “good and productive conversations,” adding that a ceasefire agreement could come “very soon.” The S&P 500 surged 3%, marking its best single-day performance in nearly a year. Oil slid toward $85 per barrel. For a day, the market priced in a world where the Strait of Hormuz reopens. That narrative didn't last long. In a televised address Wednesday, Trump said Iran must formally accept U.S. terms before any agreement would be recognized, reaffirming an April 6 deadline.
