Larger institutions continuing to double down on venture debt and companies seeking bigger checks fueled 2025's record activity. “The big boy firms are coming down to the market because it's worth their time now,” said Marshall Hawks, an alum of Silicon Valley Bank and author of a new book on venture debt. “The check sizes are way more meaningful to them now, so they're coming to the table.” Deal activity topped 2024's record of $61.1 billion. There were fewer transactions, though, with deal count dropping from 1,168 deals in 2024 to 943 in 2025, a 19.3% drop . In the wake of SVB's collapse in 2023, it was non-bank lenders that swooped in to fill the void.
