Fresh Del Monte Produce is introducing Rubyglow pineapples, a new variety of the tropical fruit, to the U.S. market this week after it was initially launched in January in China. It will be available nationwide through select regional grocers and online from specialty product retailers. A singular Rubyglow pineapple sells for the jaw-dropping $400, and it is only available for purchase right now in the U.S. and China. What makes the Rubyglow pineapple unique? Grown in Costa Rica after a 15-year development period, the Rubyglow pineapple is a registered plant patent in the U.S., Del Monte describes it as a cross between a traditional pineapple and a Morada variety. The hybrid fruit takes two years to grow, and its limited seed supply is the reason behind the scarcity of pineapples in the global market. Only a few thousand will be produced this year.
