Californians are likely used to seeing SpaceX's Falcon 9 thundering into the sky and soaring overhead, but another rocket is soon due to blast off from the West Coast Firefly Aerospace, a startup based in Cedar Park, Texas, is planning to launch its Alpha rocket on its first spaceflight in about 10 months. The mission would be a critical return-to-flight test for Firefly after the Alpha rocket's previous launch in April 2025 ended in failure. Classified as a small-lift launch vehicle, Alpha has been vertical since the end of January on the launch pad at the Vandenberg Space Force Base as Firefly prepares for the test flight. The company also conducted a 20-second static fire test Feb. 6 in which the rocket was fueled and its four engines were fired up to confirm all systems are go before launch.
