The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate in the United States hit 6.11% for the week ending Thursday, according to the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation that's better known as Freddie Mac. That's up from 6% the previous week . Rates had fallen to 5.98% for the week ending Feb. 26, the first time they'd dipped below 6% since rates started to rise in 2022 from record lows during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the Freddie Mac website pointed out that a year ago, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was at 6.65%, after briefly climbing above 7% in January 2025, noting purchase applications increased this week.
