Yet precipitation next year likely holds the fate as to whether those links, the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort, will be in pristine-enough shape to host a prestigious PGA tournament in January 2027 and prevent the event, worth an estimated $50 million to Maui's economy, from being canceled for a second year in a row. The PGA in September called off The Sentry tournament scheduled for Jan. 5-11 due to bone-dry course conditions, ending a 27-year run of its annual season-opening event at the venue blanketing a rolling Kapalua hillside overlooking the ocean toward Molokai. The owner of the course, Japanese billionaire Tadashi Yanai, has been eagerly pursuing avenues to secure a new adequate supply of irrigation water. Those options include developing one or more groundwater wells, a desalination plant and a pipeline to deliver treated county wastewater from Lahaina over 5 miles away.
