Mitchell has weakened from a category 3 strength to category 1 and will maintain intensity until it crosses the Gascoyne Coast later on Monday, before it moves inland to the southeast and quickly weakens, the Bureau of Meteorology said in an advisory Monday. A flood watch has been issued for the Gascoyne and southern Pilbara coastal regions. Western Australia is a key center for iron ore production and exports, and also hosts significant LNG facilities. This is the first significant Australian cyclone this season, which typically runs from November to April.
