Twenty years ago, I was part of a small team that visited the very first island in Maldives that was leased to our hospitality company. Where the reef began, we had to get off the wooden boat onto a dinghy, row across the lagoon, jump into waist-deep water and wade through it, dragging the dinghy with us to the shore. It was a small island with lush vegetation, white sands, blue crystal waters and a vibrant house reef. The question in our minds was: How do we build and operate on this delicately beautiful piece of land with minimal invasiveness? Over the years, we have been able to refine and improve our answers with learnings from each cycle.
