Related news Gilead Sciences ' ( GILD ) experimental coronavirus treatment succeeded in a Phase 2 study — leading to a report the drug known as remdesivir could gain Food and Drug Administration emergency authorization on Wednesday. Citing a senior official, the New York Times reported the FDA could grant remdesivir an emergency use authorization later today. Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he was "very optimistic" about the study. In addition, Gilead said its own Phase 3 study of remdesivir in severe Covid-19 patients showed a similar benefit for a five-day course as for a 10-day regimen. This could expand the number of doses Gilead can make of the coronavirus treatment. Needham analyst Alan Carr called the news encouraging, but noted Gilead has said it plans to make the first 1.5 million vials of the coronavirus treatment for free.
