Ford And VW Align To Build EVs, Self-Driving Cars, Pickups And Vans Ford and VW are forming an alliance and one of the outcomes will be VW selling a pickup based on Ford's Ranger. Ford.com Faced with extremely high development costs for scaling up electric and autonomous vehicles, Volkswagen AG Ford Motor Co. Both companies left it vague as to how much money each would save, but estimates are that it will save each company billions in capital investment. The automakers described the arrangement as an “alliance,” and ruled out equity investments in one another’s companies. Ford is no stranger to research and development alliances, having worked through such agreements with General Motors to develop a transmission, and with Toyota to share hybrid technology.
