Awarded by the 98-strong international World Car of the Year (WCOTY) judging panel, the World Car Person of the Year is awarded to the person who has had the most positive influence in the car industry for a given year. Zipse beat out shortlisted finalists David Craig, the Staff Product Manager at General Motors, and Slate's Head of Design Tisha Johnson. A BMW “lifer”, Zipse took over the company's top job in 2019 after joining BMW in 1991, and he has now seen it through to the biggest product technology change in its history with the Neue Klasse range, whose first vehicle will be the Zipse's lifetime achievement has been praised by WCOTY Chair Emeritus Jens Meiners, who said his career had been remarkable and left BMW in a stronger financial position than he found it in.
