City and other American manufacturers to step up in a way that they haven't since World War II, according to published reports. Senior defense officials recently met with top executives at General Motors and Ford Motor about producing weapons and other military supplies, The Wall Street Journal reported last week, citing people familiar with the discussions. The U.S. Defense Department wants the companies to use their personnel and factory capacity to increase the production of munitions and other equipment amid the Iranian campaign and the ongoing war in Ukraine, the newspaper reported. The Pentagon push also comes as officials in Massachusetts have emphasized the strength, diversity and economic importance of the state's defense industry. In a statement to the Journal, the Pentagon said it's “committed to rapidly expanding the defense industrial base by leveraging all available commercial solutions and technologies to ensure our warfighters maintain a decisive advantage.”
