Following numerous failed attempts to resuscitate BrightDrop, General Motors' pricey electric vans produced in Canada, the automaker decided in late October to cut production for good ? just as the vehicle found its niche in the overcrowded commercial van marketplace. Dropping BrightDrop wasn't an easy decision, as Ian Hucker, vice president of GM Envolve, the Detroit automaker's fleet and commercial business line, said that after a slow sales ramp-up for the van, GM discovered a variety of applications that went “well beyond the initial concept and design of last-mile parcel delivery.” GM has spent much of this year recalibrating its production toward gas-powered vehicles produced in the United States in response to President Donald Trump 's tariffs and initiatives geared toward stripping fuel-economy standards and removing federal tax credits for electric vehicles.
