People are searching online for electric vehicles more now that gas prices have remained elevated above $4 per gallon since the start of the U.S.-Iran war. But thus far, there are few signs that elevated interest is converting into new EV sales. The number of visitors who searched Edmunds.com for specific electric makes or models increased from 9.6% in February 2026 to 11.6% in March 2026, the group said. But EV sales in March remained flat at 6.2% of all new car purchases, up slightly from 6% in February 2026. Further illustrating the gap between EV searches and sales, new polling from the website Bumper.com shows that just 12% of respondents to a survey of 2,228 people said they planned to buy an EV because of rising gas prices . The group said the survey was conducted April 3–6, 2026 The one area of growth in EV sales thus far this year has been used EVs. Used EV sales in March reached 42,924 units, which is the most recent data available, according to a report from Cox Auto
