The auto industry has been scrabbling to adjust after President Donald Trump introduced heavy tariffs last year, and although the Supreme Court has blocked many of these tariffs , auto tariffs have remained in place, keeping car prices high. Analyzing financial reports that were available at the time of publication, Automotive News (subscription required) reports that U.S. tariffs have cost automakers "at least $35.4 billion since 2025." That's more than 10% of America's GDP, which is projected at $31.8 trillion for 2026. Unsurprisingly, some automakers have suffered more than others, and Toyota may be the worst off, projecting ¥1.45 trillion ($9.1 billion) in costs for the 2026 fiscal year, ending on March 31, the biggest tariff bill so far.
