GameStop , one of the nation's largest retailers of games, technology and game resell, has closed 435 stores as of January, according to multiple media reports and gsclosing.blogspot.com, a website tracking shutdowns. As of January 2026, stores have closed in 42 states. In Alabama, Gamestop stores in Birmingham at Riverview Parkway, Hartselle in Hartselle Plaza, Mobile on Airport Blvd., Opelika in Gateway Commons and Troy in Troy Plaza have closed. The chain also closed stores in Alabama last year, including two locations in Birmingham and Montgomery and locations in Leeds, Oxford and Sylacauga. In 2024, 590 Gamestop stores closed nationwide. The chain had indicated it planned to close multiple stores in its December 2025 SEC filings, Polygon first reported. “We anticipate closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” the filing reads.
