Federal regulators are investigating Waymo's self-driving cars after one struck a child in a school zone. The child sustained minor injuries in the crash, which occurred near a Santa Monica elementary school. The investigation will examine the vehicle's behavior in school zones and its adherence to speed limits. Federal regulators are investigating the safety of autonomous vehicles operated by Waymo, the autonomous-vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., after one of the self-driving vehicles struck a child near an elementary school. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted to its website on January 29 that its Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has in a January 23 crash that "occurred within two blocks of a Santa Monica, California elementary school during normal school drop off hours."
