She came from the furniture start-up Mine and developed a new furniture concept for Banana Republic, a division of Gap Inc. On April 29, 2024, I published an interview with Polly Wong, President of Belardi Wong, who told me (and my readers) that home goods were not selling well. Stangl obviously had picked the wrong time to add furniture to Banana's future. Banana Republic's strength has traditionally been in men's furnishings, and Banana's opportunity is women's apparel; that side of the business needs strengthening. Richard Dickson, chairman of The Gap, was looking to the Banana Republic's management team to refine the brand's position and to show some growth. However, with the first quarter report imminent (May 30) for The Gap, Dickson took the drastic action to dismiss Stangl, so it's safe to assume and we can look for no amelioration of sales softness for Banana Republic in the quarter that just ended.
