after the People's Bank of China set the daily fixing at 7.0358 per dollar, a level that came in 301 pips weaker than the average estimate in a Bloomberg survey. The gap between the reference ratewhich allows the onshore yuan to trade within a 2% bandand market forecasts was the largest since the survey began in 2018, following the offshore yuan's move past the psychological 7-per-dollar level for the first time since September 2024. The fixing suggests policymakers could be trying to manage the speed of appreciation rather than reverse it, possibly to limit hot-money inflows while still maintaining a broadly firmer currency trajectory.
