There will be no update of the Summary of Economic Projections (dot plot) this time around. That decision is already a foregone conclusion for traders, with fed funds futures pricing in a 97% chance of no move. The first quarter-point rate cut is now pushed to November (with a 60% chance) with no more priced in for the rest of the year. There is a 24% chance that 2024 sees no cuts at all. Goldman Sachs says: "We expect the next few inflation reports to be softer and have therefore stuck with our forecast of cuts in July and November, but even moderate upside surprises could delay cuts further." "Beyond November, the Fed path will depend on whether inflation continues to fall toward 2%," they added. "Our baseline expectation is that it will, and that the Fed will therefore continue cutting in order to normalize the funds rate." Here's how J.P. Morgan seed FOMC members on the Dove-to-Hawk scale: UBS says due "to the stronger data, we expect September 2024 to be the first cut.
