The price of gold jumped as high as $4,420 (£3,290) per troy ounce in early trading in London, benefitting from a gain of almost 2pc. The latest surge in prices has been triggered by Donald Trump's blockade and seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers , leading traders to rush into safe haven assets. Investors worry that other assets, such as US stocks and the dollar, could become more volatile if tensions escalate. The US attempted to intercept another oil tanker near Venezuela on Saturday according to sources, as President Trump ramps up pressure on Nicolas Maduro to relinquish power. Gold prices have almost doubled in the past two years amid increased geopolitical tensions, surging 68pc this year alone – the fastest annual pace since 1979.
