The fashion retailer said conflict was likely to have “knock-on effects” across its business , as it battles higher air freight fees and inflated fuel costs. If the disruption drags on longer than expected, Next said it would have to start increasing prices in its stores. However, it said this was currently a “contingency, not a plan”. In its latest trading update on Thursday, the company said: “Much will depend on how long the conflict persists, and how much permanent damage is done to the world's energy infrastructure.” Next said if the war continued, extra costs would be reflected in “higher prices to consumers and disruption to our supply chain, both of which are likely to suppress sales”. There are mounting fears that the war in Iran will start piling fresh pressure on shoppers as global trade chaos and higher energy costs threaten price rises.
