The unemployment rate was 4.6% in November as the U.S. added 64,000 nonfarm jobs, above economists' estimates of 4.4% and 40,000 jobs, according to FactSet. In October, the BLS reported the U.S. shed 105,000 jobs, a steep drop from the revised-down 108,000 added in September, after government employment decreased by 162,000 roles in the month. Several brokerages anticipated a sharp decline in added jobs for October: Goldman Sachs estimated job growth of 10,000 positions, while Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Deutsche Bank each projected a loss of 60,000 or more. Fed Chair Jerome Powell last week warned November's jobs numbers “may be distorted,” noting household survey data—used to calculate nonfarm payroll employment—was not collected in October or for half of November.
