Guangshen Railway: An Interesting 'Cigar-Butt' Style Value Investment Summary Guangshen Railway: a company that does nothing special - operating a slow-growing railway line in the Pearl River Delta in China. Despite the opening of a high speed railway line nearby to it, demand is still strong due to its stations being located nearer to the hub of their respective cities. Although their low earnings yield of just 4% would typically make this a bad investment, the company is sitting on extensive assets in the form of valuable land. With their parent company having a large amount of debt, there is pressure to allow more privatization for railways. This is starting to allow them to unlock this value. Worst-case scenario, investors make a long-term 5% annual return. If things go right, investors are effectively getting a railway for free, making this a classic cigar-butt style investment.
