Today's news is likely the Etowah County city's largest industrial announcement in a century, since Goodyear Tire & Rubber located a factory here. The project is slated for the 400-acre brownfield site that was the previous location of Republic Steel and Gulf States Steel, the company announced. The plant closed in 2000. The announcement took place in the cavernous former shipping area for the old plant's plate mill. “This doesn't happen without a lot of people working,” Sen. Katie Britt said. The new facility will produce high-quality plastic and aluminum components for automakers' U.S. plants including Hyundai in Montgomery and Kia in West Point, Ga. But at Friday's announcement, representatives of eight different automakers were represented, including Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, General Motors, Mazda and Volkswagen.
