For two seasons at the start of his career (2001-02), Jean-Mary served as a graduate assistant at South Carolina for Holtz, who died March 4 at age 89. “He was already in hospice,” Jean-Mary said on Wednesday, March 25, after practice. “I kind of went around a couple ways to get to this job, but Charlie (Strong) and Skip (Holtz) were with him when I took the job and they told him.” Jean-Mary, 50, is a former defensive coordinator at South Florida who has coached linebackers at several stops, including Georgia Tech, Louisville, Texas, Tennessee and Michigan. Yet his hiring at Notre Dame in early February marked the first time he could call South Bend home. “Coach Holtz wasn't speaking real well at the time, but they said he cracked a smile,” Jean-Mary said. “I didn't get a chance to go down and see him. I've been to Orlando and seen him before. It was just in travels and in coaching, I didn't get a chance to see him before he passed.” To be included as part of Holtz's legendar
