“One of the most impressive people I've met in my life,” Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua called Wagner in a Dec. 8 appearance on the Dan Patrick Show. “After he's done playing football, I hope he runs for president one day.” The two-year Irish starter and former team captain was asked Saturday, Feb. 28, at the NFL Scouting Combine about that famous rave regarding his leadership skills. “I heard that, and it's awesome,” Wagner said. “I've had a chance to develop a great relationship with Pete over the couple of years, just being in his office talking with him. I think right now my focus is on football.” Wagner, who renounced his final season of college eligibility to enter the draft, made it clear he hoped to keep suiting up in a football fashion for the foreseeable future. “I'm a football player at heart; I want to play as long as possible,” he said. “Maybe down the road I'll be a politician, but right now it's all football.
