No green shoots ahead for transportation sector - analyst [Seeking Alpha]

Hunt ( NASDAQ: JBHT ), Loop Capital takes a sobering look at the transportation sector in what the firm considers a “very tough freight market.” CSX ( CSX ) earned a penny better than expectations on a slight drop in revenue as a result of lower fuel surcharges and negative mix. The company also gave conservative guidance, likely because of deteriorating velocity in the industry and stricter track curfews for maintenance. But Loop analyst Rick Paterson thinks there is something else afoot. “When a railroad tells the Street that a deterioration in operating metrics is a small sacrifice for some greater good, in our experience that's never panned out, so some skepticism is warranted,” Paterson said in his research note.
