, opens new tab has turned to a team of seasoned antitrust lawyers to fight a lawsuit accusing it of forcing shoppers to spend thousands of dollars on goods before having a chance to buy one of its famed Birkin handbags. Hermes' attorneys at global law firm Latham & Watkins include Christopher Yates, who formerly co-led the firm's antitrust and competition practice, and Belinda Lee, who is vice-chair of the practice. The proposed class-action lawsuit filed in March accuses Hermes of allowing only customers with "sufficient purchase history" with the company to gain even an opportunity to buy an “icon of fashion” Birkin bag, which are handmade and can cost thousands of dollars. Hermes violated antitrust law by “tying” the sale of a Birkin to the purchase of other items such as shoes, scarves and jewelry, according to the lawsuit.
