Here's something finance people don't say enough: aluminum is in everything. Your car, your beer can, your data center, your fighter jet. It is, quietly, one of the load-bearing walls of the modern economy. Which makes what's happening to its price right now worth paying attention to, even if the word "aluminum" has never once made you feel anything. The short version: the price of aluminum hit a four-year high in early March after the US-Israel war with Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that Gulf producers use to ship their metal to the rest of the world. Prices on the London Metal Exchange, where aluminum is globally benchmarked, surged to $3,385 per metric ton. For US buyers, it's worse. A 50% import tariff that Trump put in place last June means American manufacturers are paying closer to $5,000 per ton once you factor in all the fees on top of the base price.
