Shanghai Starfive Technology , a chip design startup cofounded by Peter Lee Ka Kit, co-chairman of Hong Kong's Henderson Land Development, is planning to set up a research and development center in Hong Kong to boost its underdeveloped semiconductor industry. Headquartered in Shanghai, Starfive develops semiconductors based on RISC-V, an open-source architecture that's used to design chips for applications from smartphones to AI computing. RISC-V is a free alternative to the two dominant architectures, x86 and Arm, with the former developed by American chip giant Intel and the latter by SoftBank-backed British chip design company Arm Holdings.
