Britain's competition watchdog has launched an investigation into three of the world's biggest hotel chains amid fears about price fixing. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has begun an investigation into Hilton Worldwide, Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Marriott International because of suspicions they shared sensitive data that allowed them to “coordinate” on pricing. Investigations are focused on a data analytics tool that potentially allowed them to club together rather than compete. The tool, called STR, tracks occupancy, average room rates and revenue across 94,000 hotels globally. It is owned by US property data giant CoStar Group , which is also under investigation. The investigation poses fresh questions about the role of data platforms, on which rivals can share sensitive information without having to communicate directly.
