Cornell professor Todd Schmit gave a presentation on his research on the economic contributions of Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence and Oswego counties during Jefferson County's annual Agriculture Development Conference on Friday. But rising costs for labor, overtime, tariffs, and other production expenses are lowering profit margins, so that a more realistic projection is closer to $1.9 billion, Schmit said. His findings are the result of his research from 2024. Costs have increased about 40% since 2021, he said. “There's quite a lot of uncertainty in the industry right now,” Richard A. Ball, commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, told the 85 farmers, elected officials and agency representatives at Friday's conference at Watertown's Hilton Garden Inn.
