When a "new" superbike appears on the scene its first challenge is provenance: is high performance and sporting heritage in its DNA? Does it have a track record — in more ways than one? Norton can respond with a resounding, although ageing "yes". It's a good foundation. The world's biggest motorcycle show, EICMA , in Milan, Italy, took place early in November. It's taken the motorcycle world a few weeks to get to grips with what I'll call the second phase of assessment of the wares on display — and Norton has provoked more after-chat than most. But when we saw the acres of Chinese motorcycle manufacturer stands, at EICMA showcasing some curious and potentially exciting machinery — from near out-and-out rip-offs of established European and Japanese designs, to chin-rubbing thought-provoking manifestations of truly new and exciting ideas — it somehow gave names like Norton, who have been there, done it, got the Isle of Man TT T-shirt and taken home the trophies, even more cred.
