Once dismissed as oddball imports, these pint-sized vehicles are rapidly becoming cult favorites across the United States. The appeal starts with Japan's unique “kei” (means ‘lightweight' in Japanese and is pronounced ‘kay' as in ‘okay') class. are limited to 660cc engines and strict size regulations, designed to ease congestion and taxation in crowded Japanese cities. And boy, are they tiny—try less than 11 feet long, 4.9 ft wide and a max of 6.6 ft tall. Models like the Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet, Subaru Sambar, Mazda Autozam AZ-1, Honda Beat, and the iconic Suzuki Cappuccino, which debuted in the early 90s, were engineered for efficiency, maneuverability and affordability rather than highway dominance.
