In late 2024 and early 2025, following Nissan's financial downturn that resulted in more than 9,000 global layoffs and a 20% reduction in manufacturing throughput, Nissan entered into merger negotiations with its Japanese industry counterpart. Those talks stalled, but Espinosa recently said the company, domestically headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, revitalized discussions with Honda. “We both, I think, recognize the challenges that the industry is facing and more so both being Japanese companies, I think we need to find common footing and common ground where we can collaborate,” Espinosa said in a Feb. 12 earnings call. “We are focusing on finding projects that bring win-win to both companies, and the latest discussions are mostly focused around the U.S. and how we can collaborate in North America, given the difficult environment that we have with tariffs and the facts that we can both support each other in these hard circumstances."
