Shares are up 2% but have reversed nearly half of the earlier gain. Sales in the latest quarter were down 8% to $1.05B as a decline in Harley-Davidson Motor Company sales was offset by an almost comparable increase in sales from Harley-Davidson Financial Services. This exceeded the Street estimate by $175M. By segment, revenue was softest in licensing, followed by apparel. Gross margin tightened 3.6 basis points to 22.9% from the impact of lower volume, higher sales incentives, and manufacturing costs, more than offsetting the benefits of shipment mix and lower raw material costs. Operating margin fell 2.1 basis points to negative 5.6%. On a consolidated basis (HDMC and HDFS), the company earned a profit of $0.18 per share, down from $0.28 in the same quarter last year, but above the consensus estimate by $0.15.
