Shares of Harley-Davidson Inc. dropped 6.3% in afternoon, as the motorcycle maker said most of its global production employees have been furloughed, and that it was cutting salaries for most other salaried employees in the U.S., as it responds to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on its business. The salary cuts are on the order of 10% to 20%, with no merit increases for 2020. The company had about 5,000 employees in its motorcycles segment as of Dec. 31, with about 2,000 unionized employees at U.S. manufacturing facilities, while the financial services segment had about 600 employees. Harley said Chief Executive Jochen Zeitz was forgoing his salary, while salaries of other executives were being reduced by 30%. The stock has tumbled 49% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 has lost 15.4%.
