W hen Colgate-Palmolive set its sustainability goals, it faced a gooey hurdle: toothpaste. CP had committed to being part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Global Commitment , pledging to make all its plastic packaging recyclable. But the company produces the largest share of the world's 20 billion tubes of toothpaste annually, and environmentally speaking, they were a disaster. Lined with aluminum to keep fluoride potent and paste tasting minty-fresh, they couldn't be recycled. And making them created a large amount of carbon emissions in factories. But recyclable plastic doesn't lend itself to making soft tubes that can dispense perfect, pea-sized dabs of paste. So the company's engineers settled on the idea of creating a laminate of different grades and thicknesses of high-density polyethylene plastic, the kind commonly marked with a “2” on the recycling symbol, in an attempt to create a tube that felt good to smush, kept the contents potent and could be tossed into a recycl
