Here's what Indiana taxpayers should keep in mind going into tax season, including important deadlines and how to file for free. As of Jan. 7, the IRS hasn't officially announced when it will start accepting tax returns, but the agency typically begins in late January. Feb. 2 falls on a Monday, leading some to speculate that will be the first day of tax season in 2026, according to USA TODAY Last year's tax season began Jan. 27, a Monday. While it's possible the IRS could begin processing returns as early as Monday, Jan. 26, some financial experts told USA TODAY they wouldn't be shocked by a later start in the year.
