"Operationally, we believe the outsized capital base and solid deposit pricing trends check the boxes investors need to see before valuation multiples can start to normalize," analyst Benjamin Gerlinger wrote in a note to clients. Due to that strong capital base, Gerlinger believes the bank is likely to introduce a share repurchase plan in Q2 2024, a likely catalyst for the shares. "The ample capital base also allows for flexibility for ramping growth in 2H204 and/or a dividend increase (our least favorite option) — or any combination," he added. M&A seems unlikely, which is a positive. On the downside, Hancock Whitney ( HWC ) has experienced an uptick in criticized loans in Q1. Still, the company's "healthy reserve levels and thorough explanation of credit trends likely assuage most fears," Gerlinger said.
