U.S. stocks traded sharply lower at the start of Tuesday as a drop in crude values pointed to a lack of demand for commodities and slowing economic growth around the world. The S&P 500 fell 1.9% to around 2,762. The Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 578 points, or 2.4%, to around 23,072. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 1.9% to 8,402. Risk assets are falling a day after crude futures plunged into subzero territory for the first time in history, reflecting a lack of storage and a glut of oil swirling across the world. Analysts say few market participants had the capacity and desire to receive shipments of oil, at the moment. U.S. crude futures for June delivery fell nearly 30% to trade at $14.57 a barrel. In company news, shares of International Business Machines Corp. fell 6.7% a day after it reported that revenue declined in the first quarter.
