Jeff Smith, COO of World Fuel ServicesCredit: WFSJeff Smith was one of the most experienced chief information officers in the world. He led the technology functions of Ingersoll Rand, Allied Signal, Telstra, and IBM. At Suncorp, he rose above the role, beginning his tenure there as CIO, rising to the role of Chief Executive Officer of Suncorp Services. He assumed that role during the last financial crisis. Smith believes part of the reason for his ascent was his appreciation of culture, noting, “Product, strategy and other elements can be copied, but culture is hard.” He also believes that the problem solving nature of the CIO role is can create opportunities. “As a CIO, a key skillset that you learn is how to problem solve.
