BA is pressing the Government to suspend regulations requiring it to use 80pc of its landing slots at airports, including Heathrow, or see them reallocated the following year. Under the existing rules, airlines face being stripped of landing slots if they cut the number of flights on busy routes, even if they are forced to do so because of jet-fuel shortages. Airlines including BA are battling rising fuel costs alongside increased taxes and airport charges. The Civil Aviation Authority said Monday that it would allow Heathrow to bill carriers £320m to recover early costs from its £49bn third runway plan, subject to further consultation. The charges, which are likely to be passed to customers in higher ticket prices, cover planning and design costs for this year and 2025. They will provide Heathrow with the necessary resources to continue its work on expansion, the regulator said.
