In the past five years, I have written a number of articles applying pivot analysis to the current market. Pivot analysis is a tool that should be in the toolbox of every trader and investor. Each time I write about it, I get a number of questions, and many readers have requested an overview of the technique. So in this article, I'll be giving all of you a crash course in monthly pivot analysis. The term monthly indicates that the pivot levels are calculated using the prior month’s high, low and closing price. Quarterly pivot analysis, another tool, uses the same equations, but the previous quarter's data. The basic formulas are now well-known and pivot calculators are readily available on the Internet. But for those interested in calculating the important pivot levels themselves, they are as follows: If a market closes above the monthly pivot, then the trend is positive, and closing below the pivot is negative.
