Peter Kneffel/dpa German chipmaker Infineon reported a drop in annual profit and revenue on Wednesday, but expressed optimism that booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) data centres will drive growth ahead. The company earned just over €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in the 12 months to September, down about 22% from the previous year. Revenue also slipped slightly. Business was particularly weak in semiconductors for renewable energy applications, while Infineon's largest and traditionally strong automotive division was hit by the ongoing slowdown in the car industry. A weaker US dollar also weighed on earnings. Chief executive Jochen Hanebeck said Infineon had met expectations despite the challenging environment and struck a cautiously upbeat tone for the year ahead.
