China's film industry had a great year in 2025 as the popularity of animated sequels, including “Ne Zha 2” – the world's top-grossing film last year – and Disney's “Zootopia 2” helped to generate an overall 20% annual increase in box office revenue in the country to $7.4 billion. The stars are aligned for another year of growth in 2026, says the China CEO of global entertainment technology company IMAX. One trend in China that's “emerging as a key growth engine” and likely to continue this year: movies with main characters that audiences want to follow over time, said IMAX China CEO Daniel Manwaring in an email interview. “Character-driven stories and intellectual property (IP) structurally outperform others – they are fundamentally different from other IP. They deliver stronger emotional attachment, longer tails and higher repeat engagement — as seen in “Ne Zha 2,” “Demon Slayer” and “Zootopia 2,” with repeat-viewing rates ranking among the top 10 of 2025 releases,” he said.
