Businesses wary as PMI readings fall to multi-year lows across the globe If retail sales are anything to go by (and they should be), U.S. consumers feel pretty confident and are happily spending away. Businesses, by contrast, are not, judging by the sentiment of purchasing managers in the U.S. and across the globe. Concerns over global growth sent U.S. stocks DJIA, -1.60% sharply lower on Friday, and further flight to government bonds TMUBMUSD10Y, -0.84% . The flash reading of U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to a 13-month low of 53.9 in December from 55.3 in November, IHS Markit reported Friday. On the services side — typically less volatile — the flash PMI reading fell to an 11-month low of 53.4 in December from 54.7 in November. Any reading above 50 indicates improving activity. “Importantly, although growth remains relatively robust, momentum is being lost and is likely to continue to fade as we move into 2019,” said Chris Williamson, chief business economis
