More recently, internal business leaders have been deploying emerging technologies on the digital edge. The result has been a disconnect between an embedded digital core and edge applications and tools that are piecemeal and decentralized. To make better use of resources and enable the edge to scale, I believe IT should align its core more closely with innovation that is occurring outside of it. The platform approach is a viable way to bridge this gap. Entrenched Core, Splintered Edge Record-keeping has long been at the heart of enterprise IT. Related core processes are tied to ERP, CRM, inventory control and other data-centric systems. Corporate IT has upgraded them, in many cases moving them to the cloud, but they remain largely self-contained and hard-coded, especially for commodity functions, such as accounting or controlling.
