Growth stalled in January, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show, worse than the modest 0.2pc boost expected and down from 0.1pc in December. Flatlining growth came even before the shock of the Iran war , which began at the end of February. All this bodes ill for unemployment, which is already at a post-Covid high. Many economists warn that it could soon reach its highest level in 11 years, putting around two million people out of work. Ordinarily, this would be a strong signal to policymakers at the Bank of England that interest rates need to be lowered to boost the economy. But these are no ordinary times.
